It’s that time of year again, ladies & gentlemen. Every year on Thanksgiving morning, NBC and CBS both televise different coverages of the parade in New York City. One of the most exciting parts of both telecasts is getting treated to performances from some of Broadway’s current offerings. So as the title of this blog says, here is your guide not only to what will be performing on the parade, but also which network they’ll be appearing on.
On NBC, we shall see a quartet of shows performing in front of Macy’s department story before the parade officially begins. And that quartet will be...
Anastasia-This seems like a natural choice for Macy’s Parade. Not to mention that timing couldn’t have been more perfect as the animated film musical celebrates its 20th anniversary this week (on November 21st, to be exact). Will they perform ‘A Rumor in St. Petersburg’ or ‘Paris Holds the Key (To Your Heart)’?
Dear Evan Hansen-This is an interesting choice for Macy’s parade as Dear Evan Hansen is such a small, intimate musical that seems more like an option for CBS. But then again, it does seem like a good idea for the show to earn more national exposure here as Ben Platt (the Tony-winning star) gave his final performance in the Broadway production this past Sunday. I wonder what the staging will look like outside in front of Macy’s.
Once on This Island-Anastasia isn’t the only musical by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty that’ll be performing on Macy’s Parade as the first Broadway revival of their cult musical, Once on This Island will be performing as well. Since this production is currently in previews with opening night set for December 3rd, a performance here should certainly give it some exposure going into the winter months. Given how Once on This Island is utilizing some specific staging at the Circle in the Square Theatre (one of the smallest venues on Broadway), it should be really interesting to see what the staging will look like with more space outside.
SpongeBob SquarePants-After having appeared as a balloon on the parade for many years, the popular cartoon character will be making another appearance this year as his Broadway musical (I know, it sounds like the most ridiculous idea ever thought of) is currently in previews with opening night set for December 4th.
On CBS, we shall see performances from two Broadway shows that had already filmed their segments in front of audiences at their venues. And those two musicals are...
Come From Away-While I probably think it would’ve been a better idea to have Dear Evan Hansen perform on CBS with this show performing on NBC, still, what better way to spend Thanksgiving than with the folks up in Gander, Newfoundland? ‘Welcome to the Rock’!
Waitress-As this show is currently in its second year on Broadway, the producers of Waitress are once again planning to serve up some pie on Thanksgiving morning (especially since Jason Mraz recently joined the cast for a limited run).
Be sure to watch the parade this Thursday morning from 9:00-12:00. You can also flip through both coverages that will air on NBC & CBS. Just remember...
