Directed By Gareth Edwards; Screenplay By Gareth Edwards & Chris Weitz; Story By Gareth Edwards; Starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Amar Chadha-Patel, Ralph Ineson, Veronica Ngo, Marc Menchaca, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney.
The Creator is set in a future impacted by war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. The story follows Joshua Taylor (John David Washington), an ex-special forces agent who is recruited to hunt down and kill the "Creator", who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war by destroying mankind itself. Although Joshua must choose whose side he is on when he discovers what the weapon actually is.
Writer/director Gareth Edwards crafted quite an admirable sci-fi epic that successfully tells a very human story. Not only that, but he manages to work in some comic relief that never feels out of place. Hans Zimmer’s musical score feels very complimentary to the themes of the film. The editing by Hank Corwin, Joe Walker, and Scott Morris keeps the whole thing moving at a great pace. Most impressively, this movie has such an enormous scope produced on a production budget of just $80,000,000.
John David Washington gives an emotional performance as Joshua, a military sergeant who lost his family in the war with A.I. He shares heartfelt chemistry with newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles as a young robotic simulant named Alpha-O. On her own, she gives such excellent work. Other highlights of the cast are Gemma Chan as Joshua’s deceased wife, Maya, Ken Watanabe as a New Asian simulant soldier, Harun, and Allison Janney as U.S. Army colonel, Howell.
Big VFX heavy films moving forward should really take notes from how The Creator was made. Several of them from earlier this year proved to be box office disappointments in part due to their inflated $200,000,000+ production budgets. By finding ways of creating the epic scope while still making it more cost effective, that should once again prove that sometimes less is more. Above all, The Creator is worth seeing. It’s not everyday you see a major studio putting out original sci-fi movies like this.
Rating: 4/5
