Written & Directed By Celine Song; Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, & John Magaro.
Past Lives tells the story of two deeply connected childhood friends named Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). Yet, the end up being wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea to the United States. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week in New York City as they confront notions of love and destiny.
As director, Celine Song has crafted such a stunning film. The cinematography by Shabier Kirchner consists of a good deal of long wide shots used quite effectively. The editing by Keith Fraase moves along very well. The musical score by Christopher Bear & Daniel Rossen is so emotionally elegant. Though as a writer, Song created quite an original and unpredictable story about relationships.
Each of the three main characters all work perfectly together. Greta Lee gives a pleasant performance as Nora. The chemistry she shares with Teo Yoo as her childhood friend, Hae Sung, is heartfelt. John Magaro is very charismatic as Nora’s American husband, Arthur. Whether you’ve experienced any of the relationships in this movie or not, Past Lives is still easily relatable to everyone. Don't wait until it's available to watch on demand, find a showing in theater near you ASAP.
