So it was just announced that a stage adaptation of the 2001 film musical Moulin Rouge! is in the works with director Alex Timbers at the helm and Tony-Winning playwright John Logan adapting the screenplay into a book.
A few years ago, I rented the film from Netflix, and since it was a musical, I was really excited to watch it. However, throughout the first hour of the film, the editing was so rushed up, I could not find a single shot that lasted more than five seconds long. The movie felt very cartoonish! Plus, I thought the whole idea of incorporating contemporary songs into a period setting literally gave the film an identity crisis. It left me going "Is this suppose to be 1899? Is it 2001?" It was all over the place! I mean, WHO IN THE RIGHT MIND THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE?! And the fact that this was actually nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture when it really should've been up for the Razzie Award for Worst Picture of the Year, is F**KING STUPID!
If you want to see someone truly rip this movie apart, check out this review from The Nostalgia Critic...

Baz Luhrmann is literally one of my least favorite filmmakers ever! He is so up there with Michael Bay as one of those 'hacks' who just keeps poisoning your minds with all these crazy visual pieces of SH*T! He maybe a great visionary, but he is still a TERRIBLE FILMMAKER!
But since he won’t be writing nor directing the stage adaptation, I’m completely OK with this. If Timbers and Logan can create something that is nothing like that migrane of a film, than I might just be more than OK with it.
So what did you think of the film Moulin Rouge!? Are you a fan or more like me who just couldn’t stand it? What do you think of the idea of a stage adaptation?
