There is now only one more show opening on Broadway this season with only less than a week until this year’s Tony Award nominations are announced. So today, we’ll be discussing the candidates for Best Revival of a Play. This year, there are several worthy contenders battling it for a nomination. So let’s talk about them, shall we?
What I Think Will Be Nominated:
The Crucible: There’s a lot of buzz on this current Broadway revival of the classic Arthur Miller drama, that I think it’s likely going to be on the minds of nominators as well.
Long Day’s Journey Into Night: With all the buzz surrounding the latest Broadway revival of the classic Eugene O’Neill drama, it’s likely going to be a major contender here.
Noises Off: While this critically-acclaimed production of Michael Frayn’s classic farce already completed its limited run last month, I think the nominators are likely going to remember how much fun they had at it.
A View From the Bridge: This Olivier Award-Winning pared-down production of the Arthur Miller classic that already completed its run earlier in the season just has too much going for it to be forgotten.
Lookout For:
Blackbird: While this production does seem the most likely one of these three to be nominated, it may end up being viewed more as a star vehicle for Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams.
Fool for Love: The Broadway premiere of Sam Shepard’s 1983 drama was presented by Manhattan Theatre Club back in the fall, got some pretty positive notices, but is probably going to be forgotten.
The Gin Game: Again, got some good notices back in the fall, but is probably going to be forgotten by the nominators. It may only be remembered as a star vehicle for James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson.
