With only three more weeks until nominations for this year’s Tony Awards are announced, I thought we’d discuss about some candidates for another category. This week it’s Best Featured Actress in a Play.
All of the eligible candidates have officially opened, so let’s talk about them, shall we?
Who’s In?:
Megan Hilty-Noises Off: In a role that previously earned Deborah Rush a Tony nomination for the original production back in 1984 and Katie Finneran her first Tony Award for the last revival back in 2002, Hilty could not only earn her very first Tony nomination on May 3rd, but I think she has a good shot at winning.
Jayne Houdyshell-The Humans: People were wondering if Houdyshell will be nominated in Lead or Featured. Her name is below the title and the play does seem to be an ensemble piece, though she could’ve been in Lead along with Reed Birney who plays her husband. As the administration committee recently met for the third time this season, they made no mention of how the cast of The Humans will be eligible, so it seems this category will be the one where Jayne Houdyshell will likely receive her third Tony nomination.
Saoirse Ronan-The Crucible: She’s been having a great year not only with all the award nominations she’s received for the film Brooklyn (for which I personally thought she should of won the Oscar), but also with a critically acclaimed theatrical stage debut in the current Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The 22-year-old Irish film star could soon be receiving her very first Tony nomination.
Which of the Eclipsed Girls are Getting In?:
I haven’t seen the play itself, so I can’t comment on who I think deserves a nomination. I only know that the play is an ensemble piece consisting of five women, one of them being Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o who is likely going to be nominated as a Lead Actress as her name is above the title. Though from what I’ve been hearing, the two featured actresses from Eclipsed who are likely going to be nominated are Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh.
Who Could Be Forgotten?:
Phoebe Fox-A View From the Bridge: She had a very important role in the Arthur Miller classic. It won Scarlett Johansson a Tony Award for the previous revival back in 2010. But as competition for Featured Actress in a Play is heating up, Phoebe Fox could get lost in the shuffle.
Andrea Martin-Noises Off: Before the administration committee recently met for the third time this season, people thought Two-Time Tony Award winner Andrea Martin would be eligible as Lead. But it was recently announced that every single cast member of Noises Off will be eligible as Featured, meaning it’s going to be harder for Martin’s critically acclaimed performance to be remembered on May 3rd.
Lydia Wilson-King Charles III: When the play opened back in the fall, I felt that Lydia Wilson was likely going to be nominated. But now as time has passed, I’m not as sure given all the competition coming in. I think she still has a shot, but not a strong one at this point.
