The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards are coming up! There’s so much to do in so little time, so I shall now be giving you my predictions for the Limited Series/TV Movie categories.

Outstanding Limited Series:
  1. The Queen’s Gambit
  2. Mare of Easttown
  3. WandaVision
  4. I May Destroy You
  5. The Underground Railroad
By process of elimination, all five of these contenders are nominated for Casting, but only Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, and WandaVision are nominated for Picture Editing. It’s important to have nominations in those two categories as they are usually required to win a top series award. So statistically speaking, that takes I May Destroy You and The Underground Railroad out of the running. Within the past couple of months, I had this feeling that Mare of Easttown could win. It was peaking at just the right time by airing in the spring on HBO and dropping new episodes week by week. Yet, at the Creative Arts ceremony last weekend, The Queen’s Gambit managed to win 8 awards (including Casting and Picture Editing). That was a miniseries that not only became a huge hit when it debuted on Netflix last fall, but it also became a part of the cultural zeitgeist. Less than a year after all of its episodes dropped, it hasn’t lost any steam from an awards standpoint. While we have seen Emmy voters in the past having a bit of a resistance to awarding a Netflix show a top series award, it looks like this year might be an exception to that rule.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series/Movie:
  1. Paul Bettany-WandaVision
  2. Ewan McGregor-Halston
  3. Hugh Grant-The Undoing
  4. Leslie Odom, Jr.-Hamilton
  5. Lin-Manuel Miranda-Hamilton
Of the nominees here, they each have their pros and cons. Hugh Grant is well respected, but The Undoing doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of support from the television academy. Halston may have a little more support with four other below the line nominations, but the show debuted with mixed reviews on Netflix back in May, and Ewan McGregor is its only acting nominee. Then again, Mark Ruffalo still managed to win this award last year despite being the lone representation for I Know This Much is True, a miniseries that many people didn’t really care for beyond his performance. As for Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr., there is the question of whether voters are willing to award a performance that was designed more specifically for the stage than the screen. While several such roles have been nominated in the past, very few of them actually won. You have to go all the way back to 1993 when Robert Morse won this award for his performance as Truman Capote in a taping of Jay Presson Allen‘s one-man play Tru on PBS. Meanwhile, Paul Bettany is the only one whose show is up for Outstanding Limited Series. It also helps that he happens to be the star of one of this year’s Outstanding Television Movie nominees, Uncle Frank. For Emmy voters in the actors branch, if they also watched both that and WandaVision, then they may want to reward Bettany for the wide range of performances he has given this past year.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series/Movie:
  1. Anya Taylor-Joy-The Queen’s Gambit
  2. Kate Winslet-Mare of Easttown
  3. Michaela Coel-I May Destroy You
  4. Elizabeth Olsen-WandaVision
  5. Cynthia Erivo-Genius: Aretha
Since I have The Queen’s Gambit winning Outstanding Limited Series, it makes sense for me to predict its star, Anya Taylor-Joy, to get carried along for the ride. While I have seen some people speculating that the show could still win big without taking an acting prize like Chernobyl did two years ago, that just doesn’t seem right to me. Anya Taylor-Joy is literally the face of The Queen’s Gambit. Her performance is one of the major aspects that kept audiences hooked from beginning to end. She already swept through the winter awards with wins from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild. If she doesn’t win, I could see Michaela Coal or Kate Winslet taking it instead given all the buzz and acclaim they both received for their respective performances. Though with that being said, expect Anya Taylor-Joy to be coronated as Queen at the Emmys this year.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Movie:
  1. Evan Peters-Mare of Easttown
  2. Thomas Brodie-Sangster-The Queen’s Gambit
  3. Daveed Diggs-Hamilton
  4. Paapa Essiedu-I May Destroy You
  5. Jonathan Groff-Hamilton
  6. Anthony Ramos-Hamilton
This is a bit of a tricky category to figure out. Before nominations were announced, people were expecting John Boyega (Small Axe), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit), and Donald Sutherland (The Undoing) to be big contenders. Yet, all three of them were snubbed. So what to do with this race? I’m predicting Evan Peters to win. He was constantly seen as one of, if not, the standout on Mare of Easttown. I think this could be the best place to award that show on the main telecast. Though if Thomas Brodie-Sangster pulls off a surprise here, that could signify strength for The Queen’s Gambit.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/Movie:
  1. Kathryn Hahn-WandaVision
  2. Julianne Nicholson-Mare of Easttown
  3. Moses Ingram-The Queen’s Gambit
  4. Renée Elise Goldsberry-Hamilton
  5. Jean Smart-Mare of Easttown
  6. Phillipa Soo-Hamilton
In the finale of Mare of Easttown, Julianne Nicholson received such a standout moment (which I’m not going to give away for those who haven’t seen it). Although I’m not sure if she can realistically win because there is the question of whether or not Emmy voters were able to watch the series the whole way through. Leading up to the finale of Mare of Easttown, Nicholson doesn’t really get as many opportunities to shine. Meanwhile, Kathryn Hahn was seen as a standout throughout the entire run of WandaVision. With more grand moments in the spotlight there, that could give her the edge in this category.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards air on CBS this Sunday night at 8:00.
