The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards are coming up! There’s so much to do in so little time, so I shall now be giving you my predictions for the Comedy Series categories.

Outstanding Comedy Series:
  1. Ted Lasso
  2. Hacks
  3. The Flight Attendant
  4. The Kominsky Method
  5. Pen15
  6. Black-ish
  7. Cobra Kai
  8. Emily in Paris
By process of elimination, The Flight Attendant, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, Pen15, and Ted Lasso are each nominated for Casting. However, only three of those (The Flight Attendant, Hacks, and Ted Lasso) are also nominated for Picture Editing. It’s important to have nominations in those two categories as they are usually required to win a top series award. At the Creative Arts ceremony last weekend, Ted Lasso managed to win three awards (including Casting and Picture Editing). If you ask me, I think there’s too much in that sitcom’s favor for it to lose here. Ted Lasso has become one of Apple TV+’s flagship shows (as well as one of the main reasons why people have been subscribing to one of the newer streaming platforms on the market). It may only be in contention for the first season this year, but I think it especially helps that the second season has been airing right in the middle of final Emmy voting. The show’s closest competition is probably Hacks given how much buzz that new series from HBO Max has gotten, but I’d be shocked if the winner ends up being anything other than Ted Lasso.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
  1. Jason Sudeikis-Ted Lasso
  2. Michael Douglas-The Kominsky Method
  3. Anthony Anderson-Black-ish
  4. Kenan Thompson-Kenan
  5. William H. Macy-Shameless
I think the real question here is who’s going to be the distant runner-up to Jason Sudeikis? I’m guessing Michael Douglas given that he is the most respected actor out of all the nominees as well as the fact that it is the final season of his show, The Kominsky Method. Though with all the popularity Ted Lasso has, it’s hard to imagine the face of it all, Jason Sueikis, losing at this point.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
  1. Jean Smart-Hacks
  2. Kaley Cuoco-The Flight Attendant
  3. Allison Janney-Mom
  4. Tracee Ellis Ross-Black-ish
  5. Aidy Bryant-Shrill
When The Flight Attendant debuted on HBO Max back in the fall of last year, Kaley Cuoco was an early frontrunner to win this category for her buzzy performance on that show. Yet, along came Jean Smart with her powerhouse performance on another HBO Max series, Hacks. The last couple of times she has been nominated, a number of people predicted her to win, but someone else ended up beating her. This time around, I think things are looking good for Jean Smart. It especially helps that she has an additional bid this year for her supporting role in the HBO miniseries, Mare of Easttown. I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t win.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
  1. Brett Goldstein-Ted Lasso
  2. Bowen Yang-Saturday Night Live
  3. Kenan Thompson-Saturday Night Live
  4. Paul Reiser-The Kominsky Method
  5. Nick Mohammed-Ted Lasso
  6. Jeremy Swift-Ted Lasso
  7. Carl Clemons-Hopkins-Hacks
  8. Brendan Hunt-Ted Lasso
Early on in the season, people weren’t sure who exactly to predict for this category. Kenan Thompson was sort of seen as a default frontrunner for a while given the visibility he had this past year with not only Saturday Night Live, but also the debut of his own sitcom, Kenan (which he’s nominated for in lead). Not to mention that while he has won before for co-writing a song on SNL, he’s never won an Emmy for his actual performance on the show. However, Bowen Yang was seen as a big breakout star on Saturday Night Live this past season, so there is a great risk of vote-splitting there. There may be four men from Ted Lasso in contention here, but I think Brett Goldstein has the best shot of winning. While season two was airing during final voting, he managed to receive a standout episode. Not to mention that his character, Roy Kent, has been growing in popularity. So I’ve settled on Goldstein for the win here.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
  1. Hannah Waddingham-Ted Lasso
  2. Hannah Einbinder-Hacks
  3. Rosie Perez-The Flight Attendant
  4. Juno Temple-Ted Lasso
  5. Kate McKinnon-Saturday Night Live
  6. Aidy Bryant-Saturday Night Live
  7. Cecily Strong-Saturday Night Live
There may be two Ted Lasso ladies nominated here, but I think Hannah Waddingham has the edge of Juno Temple. Almost everyone who loves the show thinks that her character, Rebecca Welton, is one of, if not, the best on it. Her closest competition is probably Hannah Einbinder given that she’s been considered a breakout star with her role on Hacks. It also helps that she’s not up against a co-star as well as the factor that she’s a lead in supporting (which has helped people at the Oscars before). With that being said, this prize is Waddingham’s to lose. After having spent years working as an acclaimed musical theatre performer in London, her image in recent years has grown with her recurring role as Septa Unella on the fifth and sixth seasons of Game of Thrones, and now even more so with Ted Lasso.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards air on CBS this Sunday night at 8:00.
