The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards are coming up! There’s so much to do in so little time, so I shall now be giving you my predictions for the Comedy Series categories.

Outstanding Comedy Series:
  1. Fleabag
  2. Barry
  3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Russian Doll
  5. Veep
  6. The Good Place
  7. Schitt’s Creek
At the Creative Arts ceremony last weekend, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home 6 awards, which was the most of any comedy series this year. While the hit series Amazon Prime did very well in nominations this year, it still missed writing. Of the nominees that were recognized for directing and writing, both Barry and Fleabag each took home 2 awards last weekend. However, both of the Creative Arts wins Fleabag received were in very important categories (which were Casting and Picture Editing), so I’m predicting that to win. It’s also worth noting that despite only being the second season of BBC/Amazon comedy series, it is still the final season. We’ve seen the television academy give several farewell hugs in recent years.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
  1. Bill Hader-Barry
  2. Ted Danson-The Good Place
  3. Eugene Levy-Schitt’s Creek
  4. Michael Douglas-The Kominsky Method
  5. Anthony Anderson-Black-ish
  6. Don Cheadle-Black Monday
Last year, I predicted Donald Glover to win his second consecutive Emmy for starring in Atlanta, yet Bill Hader ended up pulling an upset for the first season of Barry. Given how much the latter series was able to improve in nominations this year, that makes me comfortable in predicting Bill to win again.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
  1. Phoebe Waller-Bridge-Fleabag
  2. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss-Veep
  3. Rachel Brosnahan-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Natasha Lyonne-Russian Doll
  5. Catherine O’Hara-Schitt’s Creek
  6. Christina Applegate-Dead to Me
Before nominations were announced, it looked like this race was going to be between Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep. After all, they are both reigning Emmy champs who also have consistent track records. Julia has won six years in a row for the first six seasons of the HBO hit. Not only that, but she also has the narrative of coming back to the series for the final season after taking a year off as she went through cancer. Meanwhile, Rachel not only prevailed last year for the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (in absence of Veep), but also took home the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice TV Awards two years in a row as well as the Screen Actors Guild for the second season. On paper, you’d think Emmy voters would just name-check previous winners like Brosnahan or Louis-Dreyfus. However, this is the fourth consecutive year of the new voting system where voters can no longer rank the nominees. It is now a plurality vote, where whatever receives the most votes wins. With that in mind, we haven’t seen as many repeat winners as usual. So I’m predicting Phoebe Waller-Bridge to win for Fleabag. Not only is she the star of the show she created, but she also has the visibility factor of being one of the executive producers of the drama series, Killing Eve.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
  1. Tony Shalhoub-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  2. Henry Winkler-Barry
  3. Alan Arkin-The Kominsky Method
  4. Stephen Root-Barry
  5. Tony Hale-Veep
  6. Anthony Carrigan-Barry
Last year, TV icon Henry Winkler finally won his very first Primetime Emmy for the first season of Barry. On paper, you’d think that voters are just going to rubber stamp that by awarding him again for the second year in a row. However, I’m predicting Tony Shalhoub to win. Had it not been for Henry’s overdue narrative last year, Tony probably could’ve won, yet he ended up being the only member of the Mrs. Maisel team that didn’t win for the first season on the main telecast. He’s previously won three times before for Monk, and has already won an individual SAG Award for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel earlier this year.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
  1. Olivia Colman-Fleabag
  2. Anna Chlumsky-Veep
  3. Alex Borstein-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Marin Hinkle-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  5. Sian Clifford-Fleabag
  6. Sarah Goldberg-Barry
  7. Kate McKinnon-Saturday Night Live
  8. Betty Gilpin-GLOW
Alex Borstein may have won for the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel last year, but she was the only actress from the show who was even nominated in this category. This year, Marin Hinkle also scored a nomination, and those two could just split their support. While there are also two nominees from Fleabag, I’m actually predicting Olivia Colman to win. It’s the afterglow of her recent victory at the Oscars for The Favourite earlier this year, and I could see her winning as part of a possible sweep for Fleabag. Then again, Anna Chlumsky has been nominated for her role on Veep five times before, but has never won. As she is now on her sixth nomination for the final season, Emmy voters may want to give her a farewell hug.

The Red Carpet begins at 7:00 tomorrow night on FOX followed by the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards at 8:00.
