The 2016 Tony Awards are only three days away. We’ve already covered the musical categories, so today we’ll be talking about the play categories.
Best Play
With all the acclaim and awards it’s been winning already, I think The Humans has the Tony in the bag. Though I think if something were to upset it, I’d put my money on Eclipsed as that play also has its share of support.
My Final Prediction:
The Humans
Best Revival of a Play
This has really been a race between the still-running (through June 26th) Long Day’s Journey Into Night and the now-closed A View From the Bridge. Back in the fall, I thought it was the latter’s to lose. But since it had ended its run back in February, how many Tony voters are going to remember that production? Long Day’s Journey Into Night may win as not only because it’s still running, but also more fresh into voters minds. Though with that being said, I’m sticking with the closed production because of how acclaimed and innovative it was.
My Final Prediction:
A View From the Bridge
Best Lead Actor in a Play
With wins at the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards, Frank Langella seems to be the favorite to win for The Father. But the recently released Tony Voter Poll from the New York Times (which surveyed about 171 out of 846 voters) points out that he’s in a close race with Mark Strong for his performance in A View From the Bridge. He did win an Olivier Award when the production originated in London. I think if the latter wins Best Revival of a Play, he may go along for the ride.
My Final Prediction:
Mark Strong-A View From the Bridge
Best Lead Actress in a Play
Two-Time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange seems to be the favorite for taking on the marathon role of Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Though if someone were to upset her, who would it be? Lupita Nyong’o could be one way voters can acknowledge Eclipsed, though she is more a part of an ensemble in that play. Michelle Williams does have a very meaty role in Blackbird, could she be the sole winner for that production?
My Final Prediction:
Jessica Lange-Long Day’s Journey Into Night
Best Featured Actor in a Play
Michael Shannon may have been picking up some steam for Long Day’s Journey Into Night at the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards, but I think with Broadway veteran Reed Birney in the running, he may pose a threat.
My Final Prediction:
Reed Birney-The Humans
Best Featured Actress in a Play
I’ve been very confused by this category for most of the season. I originally had Megan Hilty predicted to win for Noises Off because I think Tony voters tend to vote in the featured acting categories for which performance they enjoyed most. It’s hard for me to tell which of the two Eclipsed girls (Pascale Armand and Saycon Sengbloh) would win. In the end, I’m going with Reed Birney’s onstage wife from The Humans.
My Final Prediction:
Jayne Houdyshell-The Humans
Best Direction of a Play:
I think this is Ivo van Hove’s to lose for his avant-garde take on A View From the Bridge. Especially because of how much of a commodity he became in the New York theatre community over the past season with his Broadway productions of A View From the Bridge and The Crucible as well as two Off-Broadway offerings. Though I think if someone were to upset him, I’d put my money on Joe Mantello for The Humans. With The Humans and Blackbird this season, he’s probably been having his best season on Broadway (as director) since the 2003-04 season when he was starting to direct musicals like Wicked and Assassins (which won him his second Tony Award in 2004).
My Final Prediction:
Ivo van Hove-A View From the Bridge
