The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are coming up! There’s so much to do in so little time, so I shall now be giving you my predictions for the Limited Series/TV Movie categories.

Outstanding Limited Series:
  1. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  2. Godless
  3. Patrick Melrose
  4. Genius: Picasso
  5. The Alienist
While The Assassination of Gianni Versace wasn’t as acclaimed as The People v. O.J. Simpson two years ago, it was still such a well-regarded installment of American Crime Story. Not to mention that Gianni Versace did do well at the Creative Arts ceremony last weekend, taking home a total of 4 awards (including Casting). While Godless is probably the most cinematic out of all the nominees, and it did do pretty well in nominations, it only managed to win one Creative Arts Award for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie:
  1. Darren Criss-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  2. Benedict Cumberbatch-Patrick Melrose
  3. Antonio Banderas-Genius: Picasso
  4. Jesse Plemons-Black Mirror: USS Callister
  5. John Legend-Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
  6. Jeff Daniels-The Looming Tower
With The Assassination of Gianni Versace out front to win Outstanding Limited Series, it would be a shocker if Darren Criss loses here for his phenomenal performance as Andrew Cunanan. The only two obstacles I could see him facing are the ‘slap the stud’ syndrome and the fact that his character is no ‘winking devil’. We often see at the Oscars how they don’t like to award 20-something year olds nor pretty boys who don’t undergo a major transformation in the Best Actor category. They also usually prefer to award villains with more of a rooting factor like Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men or Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds. Then again, Riz Ahmed won this award last year for The Night Of, and he didn’t suffer the whole ‘slab the stud’ syndrome. Not to mention that Alexander Skarsgård won Supporting Actor for Big Little Lies, and his character was no ‘winking devil’.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie:
  1. Michelle Dockery-Godless
  2. Laura Dern-The Tale
  3. Regina King-Seven Seconds
  4. Jessica Biel-The Sinner
  5. Sarah Paulson-American Horror Story: Cult
  6. Edie Falco-Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Going into Emmy season, it looked like Laura Dern had a great shot at winning a second trophy for her performance as a #MeToo survivor in The Tale after having prevailed last year for her supporting role in Big Little Lies. However, she does look pretty vulnerable for several reasons. The Tale underperformed in nominations, only receiving two overall (it was also recognized for Outstanding TV Movie, which it lost to Black Mirror: USS Callister at the Creative Arts ceremony). Also, it’s been five years since Michael Douglas won for Behind the Candelabra, which was the last time that a TV movie won an acting prize at the Emmys. Michelle Dockery on the other hand, has been a familiar face to the TV Academy having earned three prior nominations for her role on Downton Abbey. She’s nominated again, but this time, for a completely different character on Godless.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie:
  1. Brandon Victor Dixon-Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
  2. Jeff Daniels-Godless
  3. Édgar Ramírez-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  4. Finn Wittrock-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  5. Michael Stuhlbarg-The Looming Tower
  6. Ricky Martin-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  7. John Leguizamo-Waco
For a while, I had Jeff Daniels winning this category for Godless given that he is the most respected actor out of all the nominees. Not to mention that he is a previous winner for The Newsroom (which was a huge surprise) as well as the fact that he was also seen on the small screen this past year in The Looming Tower (for which, he has been nominated as lead). However, since this new voting system was established two years ago, we’ve been seeing more newcomers winning over the veterans. That is one of several reasons why I’m predicting Brandon Victor Dixon to win for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. Another reason is because he was the breakout star of that television event with such a juicy role as Judas Iscariot, where he literally brought the house down near the end of the night with his rendition of ‘Superstar’.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie:
  1. Judith Light-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  2. Merritt Wever-Godless
  3. Penélope Cruz-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  4. Letitia Wright-Black Mirror: Black Museum
  5. Sara Bareilles-Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
  6. Adina Porter-American Horror Story: Cult
This category looks like it’s almost up for grabs. Penélope Cruz is a movie star giving an incredible performance as Gianni Versace’s long-suffering sister, Donatella. Though Judith Light is a veteran actress who’s never won a Primetime Emmy despite three prior nominations. If she wins, I think it would also be based on more than just that narrative because for the two episodes Light appears in, she is absolutely a standout as a long-suffering widow. Then again, it’s possible that both Cruz and Light could cancel each other out. If that happens, Merritt Wever could win for Godless. She is a previous winner on the comedy side for Nurse Jackie, and gets to display a more dramatic turn on the Netflix miniseries.

Be sure to watch the Emmys on NBC at 8:00 this Monday night.
