The 76th Golden Globe Awards are tonight! With so little time left, I’ll be giving you my predictions for the TV categories. These are always harder to predict because they usually like to go in their own direction. Please keep in mind that the nominees and winners are voted on by about 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. So let’s get on with the predictions, shall we?

Best Television Series-Drama:
  1. Homecoming
  2. Killing Eve
  3. Pose
  4. The Americans
  5. Bodyguard
When it comes to the series categories, HFPA members usually like to go for a first year show. Four of the nominees are first year shows while the fifth nominee, The Americans, is actually a final year show. There is plenty of buzz surrounding the shows I have in my top three predictions. I’m going with Homecoming given that it has Mr. Robot mastermind Sam Esmail behind it coupled with the fact that it has the most nominations of all the nominated first year shows. Not to mention that Amazon Prime is overdue for a Best Drama Series win. Though Killing Eve does have international flair as well as a cool factor. Then again, Pose does have Ryan Murphy behind it as well as a very diverse cast.

Best Actor in a Television Series-Drama:
  1. Billy Porter-Pose
  2. Matthew Rhys-The Americans
  3. Richard Madden-Bodyguard
  4. Stephan James-Homecoming
  5. Jason Bateman-Ozark
Billy Porter is the only acting nomination for Pose. Could he be how HFPA members could award the first year series? Then again, British actor Matthew Rhys is fresh off of his recent victory at the Emmys. Could the Globes also give him a nice send off for the final season of The Americans? Richard Madden could be a dark horse given that he’s a Game of Thrones alumni who now has his own show.

Best Actress in a Television Series-Drama:
  1. Julia Roberts-Homecoming
  2. Sandra Oh-Killing Eve
  3. Keri Russell-The Americans
  4. Caitriona Balfe-Outlander
  5. Elisabeth Moss-The Handmaid’s Tale
When it comes to the acting categories, HFPA members usually like to go for a movie star. And who is the movie star out of all the nominees? Julia Roberts! She’s earned a lot of acclaim for her small screen debut in Homecoming. It also does help that she received 8 Golden Globe nominations in the past on the film side (as well as 3 wins). Then again, Sandra Oh has also received a lot of acclaim for her performance on Killing Eve, and it also helps that she is of Asian descent. Not to mention that she is a previous winner for the first season of Grey’s Anatomy and is co-hosting this year’s Golden Globe telecast with Andy Samberg.

Best Television Series-Comedy/Musical:
  1. The Kominsky Method
  2. Barry
  3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. The Good Place
  5. Kidding
Of all the first year shows in contention, Barry and The Kominsky Method are both tied for the most nominations. I have the latter winning because it is the most recent coupled with the fact that it stars two Hollywood legends (Michael Douglas & Alan Arkin). Then again, Barry did do pretty well at the Emmys this past year. Though could it be possible for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to become that rare show to repeat at the Golden Globes?

Best Actor in a Television Series-Comedy/Musical:
  1. Michael Douglas-The Kominsky Method
  2. Bill Hader-Barry
  3. Jim Carrey-Kidding
  4. Sacha Baron Cohen-Who is America?
  5. Donald Glover-Atlanta
Not only is Michael Douglas a movie star, but also a Hollywood icon. On paper, that sounds like the definition of a Golden Globe winner. It also helps that he’s received 9 nominations in the past (as well as 2 competitive wins). Then again, Bill Hader did pull off a surprise win at the Emmys this past year for Barry. Could he do the same thing at the Globes?

Best Actress in a Television Series-Comedy/Musical:
  1. Kristen Bell-The Good Place
  2. Rachel Brosnahan-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  3. Alison Brie-GLOW
  4. Candice Bergen-Murphy Brown
  5. Debra Messing-Will & Grace
While The Good Place is not a first year show anymore, can Kristen Bell still pull off a win like Tracee Ellis Ross did for Black-ish two years ago? It’s been a while since this category saw a repeat winner, which probably doesn’t bode well for Rachel Brosnahan.

Best Miniseries/Television Movie:
  1. Sharp Objects
  2. The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  3. Escape at Dannemora
  4. A Very English Scandal
  5. The Alienist
I actually think Sharp Objects will win over the latest installment of American Crime Story. It aired on HBO over the summer to enormous acclaim, and HFPA members would probably like to give the hit miniseries a little more momentum as it heads into the Emmys later this year. Though The Assassination of Gianni Versace does still look like something that could appeal to Globe voters. Then again, they already awarded the first installment of American Crime Story two years ago when it was The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Best Actor in a Miniseries/Television Movie:
  1. Darren Criss-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  2. Hugh Grant-A Very English Scandal
  3. Daniel Brühl-The Alienist
  4. Benedict Cumberbatch-Patrick Melrose
  5. Antonio Banderas-Genius: Picasso
This is one area where I am expecting a recent Emmy champion to repeat at the Globes. Darren Criss gave such a phenomenal performance as Andrew Cunanan, that he almost seems unbeatable to me. Though if anyone upsets him, I can definitely see it being Hugh Grant. He’s previously earned 4 nominations (and a win for Four Weddings and a Funeral) on the film side, and this category does look like a place where HFPA members could throw a bone to A Very English Scandal.

Best Actress in a Miniseries/Television Movie:
  1. Amy Adams-Sharp Objects
  2. Patricia Arquette-Escape at Dannemora
  3. Regina King-Seven Seconds
  4. Laura Dern-The Tale
  5. Connie Britton-Dirty John
Of her two individual nominations this year, I think Amy Adams will win on this side for her incredible performance in Sharp Objects. She’s already won Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Comedy/Musical two years in a row for American Hustle and Big Eyes, so the Globes clearly love her. Though I would definitely keep an eye out on Patricia Arquette, who does give a very transformative performance in Escape at Dannemora.

Best Supporting Actor in a Series/Miniseries/Television Movie:
  1. Henry Winkler-Barry
  2. Ben Whishaw-A Very English Scandal
  3. Alan Arkin-The Kominsky Method
  4. Édgar Ramírez-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  5. Kieran Culkin-Succession
TV icon Henry Winkler has previously received four Golden Globe nominations (and two consecutive wins for Happy Days), so this year, I think he’ll repeat his recent victory at the Emmys. Though Ben Whishaw could be one to lookout for. He’s a British actor who could benefit from his supporting role in Mary Poppins Returns on the film side. Then again, Alan Arkin is a Hollywood legend who previously received six Golden Globe nominations (and a win on the film side for The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! back in 1967).

Best Supporting Actress in a Series/Miniseries/Television Movie:
  1. Penélope Cruz-The Assassination of Gianni Versace
  2. Patricia Clarkson-Sharp Objects
  3. Alex Borstein-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Thandie Newton-Westworld
  5. Yvonne Strahovski-The Handmaid’s Tale
Penélope Cruz appears to tick off so many boxes to warrant a win in this category. She’s the movie star, she’s of hispanic descent, she gives a transformative performance in The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and she’s previously received three Golden Globe nominations on the film side, but still has yet to win. I think that’s probably going to change this year. Though if HFPA members really love Sharp Objects, I could see Patricia Clarkson pull off a win here. Then again, Alex Borstein is a recent Emmy winner, and if voters would like to cover The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a place where they haven’t yet, this is the only way.

The Red Carpet begins at 7:00 tonight on NBC followed by the 76th Golden Globes at 8:00!
