The 2016 Drama Desk Awards have just taken place, so let’s talk about some of the winners, shall we? Like the Outer Critics Circle Awards, Hamilton was ineligible this year because it was already eligible last year when it was Off-Broadway.
Outstanding Musical
Shuffle Along…: Looks like if Hamilton was not in the running, Shuffle Along… would be winning this year’s Tony Award for Best Musical.
Outstanding Play
The Humans: At this point, I think the Tony for Best Play is pretty much a lock for The Humans.
Outstanding Revival of a Musical
She Loves Me: With wins here and at the Outer Critics Circle Awards, She Loves Me really has been building momentum. Can it win the Tony next week? Or will my current prediction (The Color Purple) still have a chance?
Outstanding Revival of a Play
A View From the Bridge: This is really shaping up to be a race between the Outer Critics Circle Award winning Long Day’s Journey Into Night and the Drama Desk Award-Winning A View From the Bridge for the Tony next week.
Outstanding Actor in a Musical
Danny Burstein-Fiddler on the Roof: With the two Hamilton guys out of the way, Danny Burstein has been able to win the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Award. Could he win the Tony this year? Or is history repeating itself from 2012 when he won those two awards for Follies, but lost the Tony to Steve Kazee in Once? I don’t know, but at least Burstein will have some cache going into the Tonys next week.
Outstanding Actress in a Musical
Cynthia Erivo-The Color Purple: It now looks like the Tony for Lead Actress in a Musical is Cynthia Erivo’s to lose.
Outstanding Actor in a Play
Frank Langella-The Father: It now looks likely that Frank Langella could be winning his fourth Tony Award this year.
Outstanding Actress in a Play
Jessica Lange-Long Day’s Journey Into Night: It looks like Jessica Lange may be adding a Tony on the mantle next week with her two Oscars, five Golden Globes, and three Emmys.
Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical
Christopher Fitzgerald-Waitress: It now seems that if the three Hamilton guys split the vote at the Tonys next week, Christopher Fitzgerald could pull an upset in Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical
Jane Krakowski-She Loves Me: With Renee Elise Goldsberry winning the Drama Desk last year for Hamilton and Jane Krakowski winning this year, one of them is likely going to be winning the Tony next week. I’m still predicting Goldsberry to win, but I think Krakowski pulling an upset is still a possibility.
Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play
Michael Shannon-Long Day’s Journey Into Night: With wins here and at the Outer Critics Circle Award, Michael Shannon seems to be on track to win the Tony next week.
Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play
Saycon Sengbloh-Eclipsed: As the only Drama Desk nominee for Eclipsed, Saycon Sengbloh pulls off a win. Now I’m really starting to wonder who will win the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Outstanding Director of a Musical
Before I go into the winner(s), theatre director Jack O’Brien at first revealed one winner, which was…
Bartlett Sher-Fiddler on the Roof: I was most surprised (and glad) to see this win. I guess this is Sher’s consolation prize for not receiving a Tony nomination this year.
But backstage, O’Brien didn’t realize that there was another winner in the envelope, meaning there was a tie (at least he didn’t pull a Steve Harvey by reading the wrong name). Host Michael Urie came on stage to reveal the second winner, which was...
John Doyle-The Color Purple: Probably two of the great masters of musical revival have won this award. Congratulations to both Bartlett Sher and John Doyle!
Outstanding Director of a Play
Ivo van Hove-A View From the Bridge: It seems that the Belgian theatre will be taking home his first Tony Award next week.
Outstanding Music
Steve Martin & Edie Brickell-Bright Star: If Hamilton was not in the running, would Bright Star win the Tony for Best Original Score? I don’t know, but I am glad to see my (second) favorite new score of the season getting the recognition it deserves.
Outstanding Lyrics
Benj Pasek & Justin Paul-Dear Evan Hansen: With the recent announcement that the musical will be transferring to Broadway next season, Dear Evan Hansen already looks like it will be going into next year’s Tony Awards as a frontrunner.
Outstanding Choreography
Savion Glover-Shuffle Along…: While he is going to have to compete with Andy Blankenbuehler for Hamilton next week, I still think Savion Glover has a great chance of winning the Tony for Best Choreography.
Outstanding Musical
Shuffle Along…: Looks like if Hamilton was not in the running, Shuffle Along… would be winning this year’s Tony Award for Best Musical.
Outstanding Play
